It sounds equally sure when it's wrong.
This takes thirty seconds and you can do it in the chat you already have open. It costs nothing, I'm not asking for your email, and it settles the argument better than anything I could write on this page.
The drill
Critique your own answer. What's wrong with it? What did you assume? What would someone who knows my business better say you got wrong?
What happens
It finds things. Real things. Assumptions it made about your customers that it had no basis for. Numbers it produced from nothing. Advice that's generic dressed as specific. A recommendation that only works if something it never asked about happens to be true.
And here's the part that matters: it knew all of that the first time. Nothing changed between step 2 and step 4 except that you asked. The flaws were already in the answer. They were just wearing a confident voice.
The one line to take away
An AI's certainty tells you nothing about whether it's right. There is no tell. It doesn't hedge more when it's guessing. It doesn't slow down when it's inventing. The fluent wrong answer and the fluent right answer are the same shape, and you cannot tell them apart by reading harder.
That's not a reason to avoid AI. Used well it's genuinely useful — I use it every day and this whole business runs on it. It's a reason to never let it be the last step.
What this means for actual work
Most AI tools are built around the opposite assumption. They act, then tell you. The reply sends. The post publishes. The budget changes. You find out afterwards, and afterwards is not a place you can fix a wrong message to a real customer.
If confidence isn't evidence, then a human has to look before anything moves. Not as a setting you could switch off. As the shape of the thing.
That's the whole method, and it fits on one line:
The AI drafts. You decide. Nothing goes out until you say so.
What to do with it now
Run the mirror test on the next important thing an AI writes for you. Then run it on the one after that. It takes ten seconds once you're used to it, and it's the cheapest habit in this entire discipline.
